I've been wanting to post a memory about Jan Marks for a long time. I don't know when she passed away or what the circumstances were. I know it was a long time ago because she's been on the In Memoriam list for so long. I don't think many people at Beverly knew her so I felt it was important to say something about her.

We both met our junior year in English class. We were both new to Beverly. I had moved here from living in Laurel Canyon, near Mulholland, and had gone to North Hollywood High School for sophomore year. Jan had moved here from Philadelphia. She had that thick Philadelphia accent that was so recognizable. She lived with her mother, who was a single parent. No other siblings that I knew of.  I lived with my Mom and younger brother; my sister was away at college and my Dad and Mom were basically separated already for a couple of years. It was easy for both of us to become friends because we were both new in a school where people had known each other for years.

Jan and I became fast friends. We had many adventures together. It was somewhat like "The World of Henry Orient" but maybe not to that extreme. We undoubtedly got into trouble with our Moms for curfew delays and not telling them where we were going. But, it was a lot of fun. Jan was full of energy and always up for an impulsive trip somewhere. Well, inevitably, we got into trouble for being out and being late and not where we should have been (it was the late 60's, what. can I say?) And my Mom didn't want me to spend time (hang out) with Jan anymore. And I guess her mother went along with it because I remember we just sort of parted ways in a nice way.

I always wondered what happened to her and if her life was okay. I never found out but during her time at Beverly she was a shining star full of adventure and fun. May her memory be a blessing.

Marcy,  you made me tear up.  I was from a single parent household as well.  I wish I had known both of you.  I hope someone related to Jan might see and read this!  Pat
